In addition to clean and precise hand contact, the placement of your hands on the volleyball can greatly impact the trajectory and speed of the ball.

  1. "BEAR CLAW"

Coach Chad advises you to think of having a "bear claw or paw" and wrapping your whole hand over the ball. You should not use only your fingertips or palm; instead, use your whole hand to cover as much space as possible on the ball. When you come up to hit, your hand should be big and flexed over the ball like a ball shape.

  2. Elbow high

When you toss the ball, get your elbow back, and keep it high. This way, you won't push it, and you can work on your contact. The key is to wrap your hand over the ball, hitting it with a slap sound. Really dive into how to hit a volleyball in our Attacking Masterclass.

  3. Contact point

The contact point is crucial in hitting the ball. You should make contact in front of you, not on your side or behind. When you wrap your hand over the ball, the ball will hit all parts of your hand, producing a true, pure contact. To get a true, pure contact with the ball, you need to hit it in the middle of the square, the meaty part of the hand. This is like the catcher's mitt in baseball. The cushion in this area of the hand will help you control the ball better as discussed in our Attacking Masterclass

  4. The Pocket

To get the perfect contact, think about hitting the ball in the pocket, which is the meaty part of your hand. You want the ball to settle ever so slightly into the left side (right side for those lefties) of your hand, not too low or high. You don't want to hurt your fingertips or palm, so aim for a big palm, hitting the ball with a *slap* sound. 5. Inside of the hand -

If you're having trouble hitting the ball, consider hitting more on the inside of your hand. This way, the ball will settle more on your thumb, and you will have better control.

Remember, you want to hear a crackle or a high five sound when making contact with the ball. This will let you know you've made a good attack. Practice wrapping your hand over the ball and hitting it in the middle of the square for better attacks on the volleyball court.
