Warm-Up : 5-10 mins

Defensive Emergency Touches

Drill 1 : 5-10 mins

  • Ball Control Touches - Each Player will perform each play the ball to themselves for 1 minute using each technique. Tomahawks, Pokeys, Slaps. Flippers.

Drill 2 : 5-10 mins

  • Dig and Catch Platform - Player 1 will be at the net, Player 2 will be in the court about 5 feet from the end line. Player 1 will toss and hit a downball to Player 2 who will dig and catch. They then return the ball to the hitter and repeat Encourage your players to dig high and forward. Each player should dig for 2 minutes.

Drill 3 : 5-10 mins

  • Handcuff Pepper - Pepper back and forth but players cant take their hands apart.  Practice controlled platform/tomahawk touches.

Drill 4 : 5-10 mins

  • Tomahawk Pull Digs - Coach/Athlete should be on the opposite side of the net as Blocker.  Coach will smack the ball to initiate blocker pull and then toss the ball for the player to perform a tomahawk dig to a setter and attack if level allows.  If you’re working with large numbers, take away the ability to attack over the net and just have the attacker catch their set.  This will allow the coach to have this going on both sides of the court with one group on each side.

Drill 5 : 5-10 mins

  • Pokey Pull Digs - Coach/Athlete should be on the opposite side of the net as Blocker.  Coach will smack the ball to initiate blocker pull and then toss the ball for the player to perform a pokey dig to a setter and attack if level allows.  If you’re working with large numbers, take away the ability to attack over the net and just have the attacker catch their set.  This will allow the coach to have this going on both sides of the court with one group on each side.

Drill 6 : 5-10 mins

  • Lay Down Digs - Player 1 should be at the net and Player 2 should be in the court about 15 feet away on their knees.  Have player 2 lay on their chest and do a sand angel.  This gives you an idea of how far they can reach while laying out.  Toss the ball low and just on the edge of the players range allowing them to practice lay down single arm digs from a kneeling position. This keeps them safe while learning the skills. Use techniques like fist, slap, remote, ice cream cone, back hand flipper. Practice each hand for 1 minute and repeat as many times as you like. Challenge the players to get to their feet and behind half court by the time their partner catches the ball so that they can prepare for an attack.

Blocking and Peeling

Reading the set. Stay or Peel, Positioning, How to Line Up and Where to Peel

Drill 1 : 15 mins

  • Crossover Peel and Dig - Coach/Athlete should be on the opposite side of the net as Blocker.  Coach will smack the ball to initiate blocker pull with a crossover step and then toss the ball for the player to perform any type of dig to a setter. If level allows, have them complete the sideout.  If you’re working with large numbers, take away the ability to attack over the net and just have the attacker catch their set.  This will allow the coach to have this going on both sides of the court with one group on each side.

Drill 2 : 25-30 mins

  • Threat or No Threat - Team A will start the drill by tossing a free ball to Team B. Team B must have a blocker get to the net.  Team B will pass, set and hit the ball back to Team A.  If the ball is a good set then that hitter is a THREAT and the blocker should stay to block.  If the set is bad or off the net, then that hitter is not a THREAT and the blocker should pull off the net to dig.  The attacker can hit anywhere they want during this rally.  Play out the point live after the toss and wave teams through after each point no matter who wins.
