What Actually Happens in a Beach Volleyball Video Analysis Session

Every week, someone asks me some version of the same question: "Mark, I've been playing for years, but I feel stuck. How do I actually get better?" And every week, my answer starts the same way: let me watch you play.

Video analysis is the single fastest feedback loop in beach volleyball. It's also the part of our coaching that people understand the least before they buy it. So in this post I'm going to walk you through exactly what happens in a Better at Beach video analysis session — what you send us, what we look at, what you get back, and how to decide whether it's worth it for your game.

Why video beats another hour of reps

Here's the uncomfortable truth about practicing on your own: you can't see yourself. You feel like your arm swing is fine. You feel like you're getting to the ball early. Then you watch yourself on film and realize you're taking off from the wrong foot, drifting under the set, and contacting the ball six inches behind your head. Nobody's yelling at you — the camera is just honest.

When one of our coaches watches your film, we're not guessing based on how a drill "looked." We're pausing, rewinding, and drawing on the exact frame where your technique breaks down. Most players fix more in one film session than they do in a month of unstructured play, because for the first time they're working on their actual problem instead of the problem they think they have.

What you send us

You don't need fancy equipment. A phone on a tripod (or leaned against a water bottle) at the back corner of the court is plenty. What matters:

Game footage over drill footage. We want to see you making real decisions under pressure — serve receive, transition, defense. Ten minutes of live play tells us more than an hour of perfect-conditions hitting lines.

Enough angles to see your body. If we're working on your arm swing, film from behind the court. Footwork and positioning? A wider angle works better.

Your questions. The best sessions start with "I keep getting blocked on line" or "my partner says my sets are inconsistent." A specific frustration gives us a place to dig.

What a session actually looks like

This is the part most people have never seen, so rather than describe it, I'll show you. This is a real live coaching session with our members — real film, real feedback, real adjustments:

A few things you'll notice in that session. First, we go frame by frame. We're not saying "keep your platform steady" in the abstract — we're pointing at the screen at the moment your platform breaks. Second, everything gets connected to a fix. Spotting the error is the easy part; the value is in the specific drill or cue that corrects it. Third, you hear other players getting coached too, which is sneaky-valuable: half of what you'll fix in your own game, you first notice in someone else's.

And here's what a full match breakdown looks like when we analyze film at the professional level — same process, higher stakes:

What you walk away with

After a session, you're not left with a vague "work on your defense." You leave with a short, prioritized list — usually two or three things, because fixing ten things at once means fixing nothing. Something like: adjust your split-step timing on defense, contact the ball further in front on your swing, and stop hand-setting balls that are drifting behind you. Each one comes with the "why" attached, because adults don't change technique on command — they change it when it makes sense.

Then you go play, film again in a few weeks, and we check the tape. That loop — film, fix, film again — is how players actually climb levels.

How to get video analysis with us

There are two ways to get our eyes on your film:

1. Inside the online membership. Our virtual training membership includes live Q&A sessions and video analysis alongside the full course library and training plans. You can try it for $1 for 7 days, and after that it's $49/month or $497/year. Cancel anytime — no phone calls, no hoops. If you've never had a coach look at your film, the trial is the lowest-risk way to experience it.

2. As an add-on at our camps. At our 3-day beach volleyball camps ($599, never more than 10 campers per coach), video analysis is available as an optional paid add-on. It pairs beautifully with camp: you get filmed doing the exact skills we spent three days rebuilding, and the film becomes your homework for the months after.

Honestly, the players who improve fastest do both — they come to camp to rebuild technique in person, then use the membership to keep the feedback loop running all year. Coaching before, during, and after camp beats any single dose of instruction.

Two ways to get beach volleyball video analysis: online membership $1 trial or camp add-onIs it worth it for your level?

I'll be straight with you: if you've played fewer than ten times, you don't need film yet — you need touches, and our beginner courses and camps will move you faster. Video analysis starts paying off the moment you have habits. If you've been playing a year or more, your errors are patterns now, and patterns are exactly what film exposes.

The players who get the most out of it are the ones who feel stuck: the AA player who can't beat the teams above them, the former indoor player whose swing works everywhere except sand, the weekend warrior who keeps losing the same way every Saturday. If that's you, a coach watching your film — not a generic tutorial, your actual game — is the shortcut.

Start with the $1 trial, send us your film, and let's find the two or three things holding your game back.

See you on the sand,
Mark
