Coach at a Better at Beach adult beach volleyball camp with players training on beachside courts

Are Beach Volleyball Camps Worth It? What Adults Should Expect (2026)

You've seen the camp photos: thirty adults on a gorgeous beach, pro coaches, everyone grinning like they just won the lottery. And you've wondered — is that actually worth a few hundred dollars and a weekend? Or is it a beach vacation with a volleyball tax?

I've coached thousands of adults at beach volleyball camps over the past decade, and here's my honest answer: it depends entirely on what you'd be doing instead. If you're already training with a coach who films you, corrects you, and drills you hundreds of reps per session — you don't need a camp. If you're like most adult players — learning from YouTube, playing pickup twice a week, and wondering why you've plateaued — three days of camp will move you further than a season of open play.

Let me show you exactly why, and exactly what happens at one, so you can decide for yourself.

What actually happens at an adult beach volleyball camp

Forget the summer-camp-for-kids picture. An adult camp is closer to a golf school or a ski clinic: structured skill instruction in the morning, live coached play in the afternoon, and a social scene at night that most campers say is half the reason they come back.

Three things separate camp training from your regular games:

Reps. In two hours of open play you might touch the ball 30 times in ways that matter. In one camp skill block you'll take 300+ purposeful reps with a coach watching each one. Volume with feedback is the entire secret of fast improvement — there is no other secret.

Coaching density. We cap our camps at a 1:10 coach-to-camper ratio, so a coach sees every rep you take. Almost every adult player has one mechanical habit they can't feel but a coach can spot in minutes — and if you want to go deeper, we offer video analysis as an optional add-on, where we film your play and break the footage down with you.

Level grouping. On day one, coaches sort players by skill so you're always drilling with your true peers. Beginners aren't drowning; competitive players aren't babysitting.

Who adult camps are for (and who they're not for)

Who adult beach volleyball camps are for: never played, rec and indoor players, and competitive A/AA players

The honest breakdown:

Never played? You're the person camps help most. You'll learn rules, scoring, and core skills on beginner-only courts, and skip the yearlong phase of developing bad habits in pickup games.

Indoor or rec player? Camp is the fastest conversion course to sand: shot selection instead of pure power, serve receive in wind, and two-person defense. Most indoor players tell us the lightbulb moment came in the first morning.

Competitive A/AA player? You'll work systems and situational strategy with coaches who've played and coached at the professional level — the stuff you can't get from your regular partner.

Who shouldn't come: if you want a silent-discipline bootcamp with no social element, or you're rehabbing an injury that can't handle 4–6 hours of sand per day, wait for the right time.

So… is it worth the money?

Run the actual math. A 3-day camp is $599 — about what you'd spend on 8–10 private lessons. Except a private lesson gives you one coach-hour, and camp gives you 15+ coached hours, plus live gameplay under a coach's eye, plus a bench of training partners at your level who you'll keep playing with for years. That last part is the sneaky one: most adults quit improving not because they stop caring, but because they never find consistent partners. Campers leave with a phone full of them.

Don't take my word for it — here's what campers say after their first one:

What to look for when choosing a camp

Any camp you consider — ours or anyone's — should clear these five bars:

  1. Skill-level grouping, not one giant mixed clinic.
  2. Named coaches with real playing and coaching credentials you can look up.
  3. A coach-to-player ratio of 1:10 or better — ask before you book.
  4. Video analysis available — whether included or as an add-on, someone should be able to show you your own footage. (We offer it as an optional add-on at every camp.)
  5. Real gameplay time — drills without live play don't transfer.

If a camp page won't tell you those five things, email them and ask. Good camps answer fast.

The fastest path: train before, during, and after camp

Here's what we see over and over: the players who improve the most aren't the ones who treat camp as a once-a-year event. They're the ones who combine an online membership with camps — they show up already working on the right things, get three days of intense coached reps, then keep the same coaches in their corner afterward to lock the changes in. Coaching before, during, and after camp beats any single weekend, no matter how good.

Where to go in 2026

We run 3-day camps and volleyball vacations all over the US — Hermosa Beach, Austin, San Francisco, Chicago, Bonita Springs, Oklahoma City, and more — plus destination weeks like Punta Cana, where you train every morning and have an all-inclusive resort for the rest of the day.

Every camp is grouped by level and capped at a 1:10 coach-to-camper ratio. Registration for most fall camps closes 1–2 weeks before start dates.
