Building the beach volleyball foundation with proper positioning

If you're interested in this blog on positioning and how to play defense in beach volleyball, you may be interested in our serving course, which, of course, is the first line of defense in, ahem, defense. It will have you serving more accurately, with more power, in just a few weeks! We'd also love to have you drop by one -- or more -- of our beach volleyball classes in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, or anywhere in the South Bay!

Have you ever tried to move in the sand? Chances are that you have -- you wouldn't be reading this blog on beach volleyball if you haven't. So, because you know how difficult it is to move, you know, then, how imperative it is to be in the right spot -- you can't depend on blazing speed in the deep sands of Hermosa Beach or Manhattan Beach.

Your positioning has to be on point.

This goes for all aspects and positions in beach volleyball. If you're a defender, you need to be positioned correctly, with the proper balance, if you want to chase down the high line shots and pick up the cut shots. If you're a blocker, you need to be positioned well so you can make a good, balanced, pressing block -- not a diving, flailing block because you were out of position.

If you're passing, you need to be in the proper position so you can make a simple move to the serve and pass another dime for your setter.

Positioning and balance is everything in beach volleyball. It's the foundation of a rock solid game that will have you breaking pool and moving up the ladder in tournaments.

In the video below, which is another portion of a previous video analysis that AVP professional beach volleyball player Mark Burik had with one of our players at Better at Beach, we discuss positioning.

It's just a 15-minute sample of what was a 45-minute tape review, and if you want a full film review with our team of professional coaches, give us a shout. We'd love to have you!

Our video analysis sessions are designed to have professional AVP athletes/coaches sit down with our players and they go through 45 minutes of tape review. Our coaches look at the player’s game film, the techniques and what decisions the player makes in a game. Watch a sample of Mark’s video analysis in action.
